Born in 1929, Jerome Sackman received his Doctor of Engineering from Columbia University in 1959. In 1961 he took a position in what was then the Division of Structural Engineering and Structural Mechanics in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. He became full professor of civil engineering in 1966, and of engineering science in 1968. After retiring in 1991 Sackman served as a visiting scientist at the National Science Foundation (NSF) in Washington, D.C. and acting director of the Mechanics and Materials Program in the National Science Foundation's Division of Mechanical and Structural Systems. He was awarded the Berkeley Citation in 1996. Sackman died in Berkeley in 2016.
